Missouri S&T’s information technology (IT) team has learned of a developing cybersecurity threat to the campus community. Scammers have been calling members of the campus community on their personal cell phones and identifying themselves as IT support staff. The callers ask for access to computers and falsely diagnose the computer as being hacked. The caller informs the S&T employee or student that they must pay to fix the issue. These calls are a scam and the callers offer fraudulent services under the guise of providing subscription-based IT support.
Missouri S&T’s IT team wants you to know and understand the following:
- The IT team will never call a personal cell phone unexpectedly.
- The IT team will never request payment from you over the phone.
- The IT team will never offer a subscription for services.
If you receive such a call or experience questionable interactions regarding support for your computer, please notify the security team immediately at security@mst.edu.
Missouri S&T’s IT team will only call your personal cell phone if you provide your personal cell phone number in a self-initiated help request. The IT team does not charge anyone directly for any service provided. Services will be charged to a MoCode that is provided by your department or invoiced accordingly.
